Yes, you can start a pearl jewelry brand with 5 pieces per design, as long as those are our designs. On your own design the minimum is 30 pieces, because someone has to make a mould and CAD for it. For e-commerce and live sellers we have even accepted 3 per design; we believe in our customers’ future business, so we would rather help a founder test than turn them away. Below is what low MOQ pearl jewelry actually involves inside our Bangkok factory: matching, size tolerances, the order we plate and set, and where the tooling money goes.
Why 5 pieces on our designs and 30 on yours
OEM means we produce your design; ODM means you choose from ours. The gap between the two minimums is not a sales tactic. A customer design needs a CAD file, a master mould from one of our 3 mould makers, and a sample. That is a lot of work to spread over 5 pieces.
Our own designs already have their moulds and CAD done, so we do not have to repeat that work for a 5-piece order. For a first-time brand we recommend using our stuff. Sizes can be mixed within the 5, which helps if you want to try a ring in several finger sizes. The current range is in our freshwater pearl collection.
How we match pearls for a 5-piece run
Freshwater pearls are not bought five at a time. They arrive as strands, hanks or parcels and are sorted by hand for size, shape, surface and luster. If a factory only had your order on the bench, matching five pairs of earrings would mean picking ten pearls out of a parcel and leaving the rest sitting there.
This is where ongoing production helps. We source pearls ourselves and have multiple orders running at the same time, so sorting happens across a much larger flow. Your five pairs come out of the same sorted lot as everyone else’s, and leftover pearls stay within that ongoing production.
Pearl sizes, cups and pegs
Freshwater pearls vary. Two pearls sold as the same size can still differ, and on a tiny run there is no budget to adjust every cast cup by hand.
Our answer is simple: we cast for all the sizes we produce. The factory makes about 132,000 pieces a month, so cups and pegs for each pearl size are already tooled. That means a small run does not need hand-adjusted cups.
Plate first, set the pearls last
Our order is plate, set, then finish. The pearl goes on only after the metal is complete and plated. We have seen the other way round, and the result is that pearls get spoiled. Plating baths and the cleaning that goes with them are made for metal, not nacre.
After setting, the piece goes through our 3 QC rounds. On pearl jewelry we check:
- quality of the pearl itself
- shake test for stones and pearls
- shape and match of each earring pair
- locks and clasps
- porosity in the casting
What tooling really costs on a small order
A mould is 100 USD. We do not charge it if you order over 30 pieces, which is why the custom minimum sits where it does. On a 5-piece custom run that fee would add 20 USD to every piece before silver, pearls or labour, and it distorts the retail math.
Our advice to founders pricing a line: retail is minimum x4 what the piece costs you. If a mould fee pushes a piece past the point where x4 works in your market, take a ready-made design for that slot and keep the custom budget for the one or two pieces that define the brand.
Ready-made or custom: how to choose
The most common mistake on a first pearl order is ordering too much. New brands should test variety and see what sells. Ten designs at 5 pieces teaches you far more than two designs at 25, and you can reorder the winners in 30 days.
One brand we worked with started selling online on Facebook and Instagram, at about x2. Once the line proved itself they opened a first retail store in a mall, marketed well as a premium brand and raised pricing to x4. Today they have stores in all the malls in Thailand. They started small online and grew step by step into retail.
Timelines for a first order
A sample takes 45 days and production 30 days after approval. The single best thing a buyer can do is send us the design right away. Most delays we see come from customers changing what they wanted partway through the sample. Terms are a 30% deposit with the balance on delivery, and we ship by DHL, FedEx or UPS. Details of both routes are on our OEM and ODM services page.
Frequently asked questions
What MOQ and budget do I realistically need to start a freshwater pearl jewelry small business?
On our designs, 5 pieces per design, and for online and live sellers we have gone to 3. Your budget is simply piece count times design count, with a 30% deposit up front, and no mould fee if you stay with ready-made designs. Spend it across variety rather than depth on the first order.
How do you keep pearl luster and color consistent for a new freshwater pearl jewelry brand on small runs?
We source our own pearls and sort them across many orders at once, so your five pairs are matched from a large sorted lot rather than from a single small parcel. Shape and match of each pair is one of the specific points in our QC.
Where do the pearls come from, and can I supply my own freshwater pearl jewelry supplies?
We buy pearls ourselves and keep them moving through continuous production, which is what makes matching on 5 pieces workable. If you have your own pearls in mind, contact us and we will advise.
Is it cheaper to buy wholesale freshwater pearl jewelry for sale from your catalog or to make my own custom design?
For a first order, our catalog is cheaper: no mould, no CAD, lower minimum. Custom makes sense once you pass 30 pieces, because the 100 USD mould is then waived.
Are pearls set before or after plating, and how do you make sure they don’t come loose?
After. We plate, then set, then finish, because pearls that go through plating get spoiled. The shake test for stones and pearls is part of our 3 QC rounds.
If you are planning a first small pearl run, send us the designs you are considering and our team will tell you honestly which ones suit a 5-piece start.
