Wholesale Jewelry Thailand vs NYC: When Buying Direct Pays Off

Buying direct from a Bangkok factory usually beats NYC or LA wholesalers on price per piece, consistency of quality and control over what you receive. It loses on speed and convenience, and on very small quantities the courier and customs can eat the saving. That is the honest summary of wholesale jewelry Thailand vs NYC from our side of the bench. Below is where the gap is real, where it is smaller than buyers expect, and how to decide.

Where NYC and LA wholesale jewelry is actually made

When a buyer tells us they currently buy from the Diamond District or the LA Jewelry District and shows us the pieces, the answer is almost always the same: Thailand, China or India. The wholesaler imported it, added a margin and held the stock locally.

That is not a scandal. Holding inventory in Manhattan costs money, and someone pays for it. But it means that for much of what sits on those shelves, you are paying US rent and US salaries on top of an Asian factory price. Our factory has shipped to buyers in 26+ countries since 2002.

How to tell a maker from an importer

Ask where the casting and stone setting happen and whether you can visit the workshop. A manufacturer can quote a production lead time, show you a mould being cut, and change a stone colour or plating on your order. An importer sells what already arrived in the box. If "can you make this in rhodium instead" gets a no, you are talking to an importer.

Where direct sourcing saves money, and where it doesn't

The saving comes from one place: you buy from the manufacturer, so the wholesaler's layer is gone. How big that layer is varies by piece and by wholesaler, so compare real quotes rather than relying on a rule of thumb.

The part people get wrong is the retail end. Retail prices for comparable silver jewelry are similar whether the piece came direct or through a wholesaler; the shop next door will not drop its price because your supply chain got shorter. So going direct rarely changes your shelf price. It changes how much of it you keep.

The mistake first-time buyers make with a Thai quote

The biggest mistake we see is a buyer putting our quote next to a US wholesale price and concluding that we must be selling plated brass, or silver that isn't really 925, because the difference is so large. We understand the reaction. But every piece we ship carries a 925 stamp and passes three quality checks, and the gap is labour cost, overhead and the missing middle layer, not missing metal. We explain the cost structure in is silver cheap in Thailand for jewelry. If you want proof, order five pieces and test them.

The landed cost nobody writes down

A factory quote is not what the piece costs in your stockroom. Before you compare wholesale jewelry Thailand vs NYC on price, add these to our quote:

  • Courier. We ship by DHL, FedEx or UPS. It is fast and trackable, and it is not free; cost depends on weight and declared value.
  • Duties and import taxes. US duty on silver jewelry depends on the HS code and whatever tariff policy is current. Ask a customs broker before you order, not after.
  • Clearance and brokerage fees charged by the courier.
  • Insurance on the shipment.
  • Time. Making jewelry takes time: production is 30 days from approval, a new sample about 45 days. And customs, in our experience, is not friendly to anyone in a hurry.

Add it up and compare the total to the wholesaler's per-piece price. On a normal order the direct route still wins clearly. On a handful of pieces it often doesn't, and we tell buyers so.

Quality and choice: what changed for buyers who switched

One buyer who moved from a US wholesaler to ordering from us said the two things that surprised them were better quality and better choices. The reason is simple. A wholesaler builds a catalogue by picking up cheap, available goods from many factories, so one tray can mix pieces from many makers with different finishing, plating thickness and stone quality. Our pieces come from one factory with one standard, with in-house stone setting and our own pearl sourcing.

Choice works the same way. A wholesaler shows you what they already bought; a manufacturer shows you the whole collection plus the option to change it. With OEM (we produce your design) or ODM (you choose and adapt ours), sizes, plating and stones are your decision. On protecting your designs, keep it practical: share CAD only after terms are agreed, and work with a factory that has its own designers and mould makers and does not need to borrow yours. Details are on our OEM and ODM services page.

Cash flow, defects and when to stay domestic

Deposit versus Net 30

We take a 30% deposit with the balance on delivery. A domestic wholesaler may offer Net 30 or cash and carry, which is easier on day one. Buyers tell us the deposit structure still helps because they pay less: 30% of a factory price is a small outlay, and the rest is paid on delivery. The only mistake we see is not planning for the balance at delivery.

When a piece arrives wrong

Sending a carton back across a border is painful, so we don't ask buyers to do it for a single fault. Our pieces carry a lifetime guarantee: if something breaks, bring the piece to us and we repair it. For any other problem with an order, contact us and we will look at it together. Every order goes through three QC checks before it ships.

The rule we give buyers

Very small quantity, stay domestic. If you need a few pieces this week to fill a case, the shipping and customs are not worth it, and a cash-and-carry wholesaler is the right tool. Once you order several designs at a time and reorder, go direct. Our MOQ (minimum order quantity) is 5 pieces per design from our collection, and new brands usually test by buying multiple designs at five pieces each rather than one design at fifty. Before you commit, run through the 12 questions to ask a manufacturing partner.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of using local versus international jewelry suppliers?

Local suppliers give you speed, no customs, easy returns and the ability to buy a few pieces today; international manufacturers give you lower cost per piece, consistent quality from one source and control over design and specification. In our experience the crossover comes when you reorder regularly and the shipping and customs become a small share of the order.

Is custom jewelry wholesale cheaper direct from a manufacturer than from NYC or LA wholesalers?

Usually yes, because you remove the importer's margin and domestic overhead from the price. Add courier, duties and clearance before comparing, and remember a wholesaler resells what it has already bought, while a manufacturer can change the piece to your design.

How do minimum orders compare between a Thai manufacturer and NYC/LA wholesalers?

Domestic wholesalers often sell by the piece, which is their real advantage. Our MOQ is 5 pieces per design from our own collection and 30 pieces per design for your own design, with sizes mixed, so a brand can test ten designs with fifty pieces.

Are NYC and LA wholesalers manufacturers or importers?

Most volume silver and gemstone lines are imported, mainly from Thailand, China and India, then stocked and marked up locally. Ask each wholesaler directly where each line is made.

What does it cost to import jewelry from Thailand beyond the factory price?

Beyond our quote you pay courier charges, US duties and import taxes based on the HS code, the courier's clearance fee and insurance. We don't quote figures here because duties change and depend on your order; a customs broker can estimate them before you commit.

If you are weighing a move from a domestic wholesaler to direct sourcing, send us the pieces you buy now or contact our team on WhatsApp. We will tell you honestly whether going direct makes sense at your volume, and if it doesn't yet, we will say so.
